New iPad can be used as Verizon LTE hotspot for over 24 hours

Anandtech took a closer look at the new iPad's 42.5 Wh battery and discovered the battery is fantastic for those using the device as a mobile hotspot. In a series of tests, they ran the Verizon WiFi+4G iPad from a full charge down to zero with the screen off. Total time was an impressive 25.3 hours on a single charge.

Overall, the battery performs as expected. The retina-equipped iPad has a run time that's slightly less than the iPad 2, and you'll get an hour less juice on LTE than WiFi.

Apple’s new Verizon iPad can serve as LTE hotspot for more than 24 hours

While Apple's new LTE-equipped iPads are designed to offer customers the same experience regardless of which U.S. mobile carrier they base their purchase on, the Verizon model currently boasts the exclusive capability of sharing its high-speed mobile broadband connection with other devices for upwards of five times longer than most standalone LTE mobile hotspots.

Rumors: Sprint plans to offer TEP coverage for iPhone; Verizon leak hints at shared data plans

Sprint plans to offer its Total Equipment Protection coverage for the iPhone.

SprintFeed received a tip that iPhone users who decided against AppleCare+ may have a second option through the carrier’s alternative insurance program.

Sprint device owners can now pay an $ 8 monthly premium for TEP insurance that covers whether a device is lost, stolen, or damaged. It is unknown if the iPhone will offer a different fee, but 9to5Mac will update once official word from Sprint is released. In the meantime, iPhone users still have a 30-days window from their original purchase date to take advantage of AppleCare+.

In related carrier news, Verizon is set to announce shared family data plans for smartphone and tablet users.

More information is available below.

PhoneArena obtained a leaked screenshot (above) that indicated Verizon plans to launch its shared family data plan very soon. The service will allow customers to pay one data fee for the entire family and all their devices.

As seen in the screenshot, family data usage is calculable for e-mail, web surfing, and other data tasks extending to 30 GB and beyond. Pricing and other details are not revealed in the leak, but it looks like Verizon is just weeks away from debuting the new system.

Now let’s hope some fair rates come with the carrier’s family data plans.

Using Verizon Personal Hotspot on your new iPad: the basic setup

One of the nice features about getting the Verizon edition of the new iPad is that you get the Personal Hotspot feature free with any data plan. Not familiar with the concept of a Personal Hotspot? It's the way to use your iPad as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, sharing your 3G or 4G connection with up to 5 other people. After I had my Verizon data plan set up, I found it perplexing that the Personal Hotspot button in Settings wasn't visible. There's a simple trick to try that will make the button appear if it doesn't show up automatically in Settings.

Normally, once you sign up for a Verizon data plan the Personal Hotspot button appears in the Settings sidebar as you see in the image at the top of this post. For me, it still hadn't shown up after 36 hours of waiting. The trick to making it magically appear was to go into Settings, tap General, and then tap Network. At the top of this panel is the Personal Hotspot button, which can be toggled on with a tap. Strangely enough, just opening the Network panel also made the Personal Hotspot button in the Settings sidebar visible.

Now, to turn on the Personal Hotspot, tap the button and a Personal Hotspot settings panel appears. Before you do anything else, you may wish to change the Wi-Fi password that is provided by default to something that's more memorable. To do so, tap on Wi-Fi Password (see screenshot below) and enter your new password, then tap Done.

When you're ready to share your Wi-Fi connection, tap the On button to toggle the Personal Hotspot on. You can also connect to the Personal Hotspot through Bluetooth or a USB cable.

For me, having Personal Hotspot as part of my Verizon data plan is going to save me money. Right now, it's an add-on on my AT&T iPhone data plan -- I'll be able to cancel that add-on and save a few bucks.

New Verizon iPad Works on AT&T’s 3G Network [Video]

The new Verizon iPad has been confirmed to work on AT&T's 3G network. iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials

Verizon iPad running with AT&T SIM installed

Over at the MacRumors forums, reader jsnuff1 has confirmed that the new Verizon iPad works with AT&T's 3G network. The Verizon iPad has a built-in GSM SIM slot and supports connections on the same 850/900/1800/1900 MHz bands as the AT&T unit.

What jsnuff1 did was to slot in an iPhone microSIM, using the standard AT&T APN carrier settings hack, and then test the unit using AT&T's 3G service. You can use this approach for both standard AT&T iPhone accounts as well as the Pay-as-You-Go ones discussed in this TUAW post.

If you take this approach, do not expect to use AT&T's LTE network. Real 4G service (i.e. not FauxG) runs on 700 and 2100 MHz for AT&T. The Verizon model supports only 700 MHz.

The opposite approach will not work. To the best of my understanding, Verizon CDMA does not use a transferable SIM, so you cannot move a Verizon account onto an AT&T iPad.

In the end, what this means is greater flexibility. When you move outside a Verizon coverage area, you can swap in an AT&T SIM and get 3G data service at least, or share that service without tethering but with a little bit of paperclip work and SIM swaps when on vacation.

Verizon 4G LTE iPad works on AT&T 3G network with micro-SIM card

Though there are two 4G LTE iPad models for the networks of AT&T and Verizon in the U.S., customers who buy the Verizon-compatible 4G LTE iPad can also access AT&T's 3G network if they have a compatible micro-SIM card.

Yes, the new Verizon iPad works on AT&T 3G networks

With the introduction of the new LTE iPad on Verizon and AT&T, many were wondering whether or not AT&T’s 3G network would work on a new Verizon iPad. According to a poster over on the Mac Rumors forums, popping your AT&T SIM card into the Verizon iPad’s micro-SIM slot appears to work just fine as long as you first adjust the AT&T APN carrier settings. Of course this does not mean you’ll be able to use AT&T’s LTE network on the Verizon iPad, but if you already have an AT&T SIM for your iPhone, this is an alternative for data when LTE isn’t an option.
