Report: Apple begins production of new 15-inch MacBook Pro next month, 13-inch in June
On the heels of the news that Intel will be releasing its Ivy Bridge processors in two waves – with high power processors coming in a month while lower power processors coming in June– Digitimes is now saying that new 15-inch MacBook Pro production will begin in the next month while Apple will wait until June to begin producing its smaller 13-inch MacBooks in June.
As Apple will start mass producing its 15-inch MacBook Pro in April, sources from the upstream supply chain have pointed out that the company’s orders for the 13.3-inch model are far higher than those of the 15-inch, indicating that Apple is more focused on the 13.3-inch notebook segment.
However, the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro will not start mass production until June.
The timing is indeed convenient to Intel’s plans, but we don’t see Apple having two separate releases two months apart in the same product line. //

Report: Foxconn is recruiting 20,000 workers for next iPhone production, facing strikes
According to reports from The China Morning News (via MICGadget), Foxconn is in the midst of a huge hiring drive, hoping to increase numbers 20,000 for production of the new iPhone in a place called Taiyuan in Shanxi Province, Northern China.
Machine translated (Chinese readers can submit a better version to tips@9to5mac.com):
Taiyuan Foxconn is building Apple iPhone5 production base, is now facing a huge shortage of workers, sources said the shortfall of about 20,000 people. The company is four nets emergency recruit people.
Taiyuan Foxconn staff Mr. Yu said that the company employment gap is still large, is the lack of shop front-line workers, “as long as they meet the conditions, the number of how many.”
Flourishing industry based on Apple’s position, the iPhone product line is Foxconn as the most important one of the foundry business in the mainland. Mr. Yu said, the Foxconn iPhone5 smart phone 85% of orders each year to produce about 57 million.
One reason for heavy and perhaps unforecasted recruitment demand might be a strike that is currently happening at the plant. According to a separate report, workers have left their machines and taken to the streets over compensation. We’re not going to pretend to understand the complexities involved but it would appear that the workers were promised a raise ahead of the next iPhone production and they may not have gotten all that they’ve asked for.
An entry-level worker at Foxconn is typically paid 1,550 yuan (US$ 245) per month, rising to to 1,800 yuan (US$ 285) per month after three months. When bonuses and overtime pay are included, a worker may typically earn between 2,200 and 3,500 yuan (US$ 345-$ 550) a month.

Pew report: The Future of Apps and the Web

Pew Internet surveyed 1,021 technology stakeholders and critics and asked them about the future of apps and the web. Unlike many surveys, this latest one from Pew doesn't have a single, unifying answer. Instead, the survey highlights the diverse opinions that exist about how we will use native apps and web apps in the future.
Rob Scott, the chief technology officer for Nokia, believes the web will dominate and argues, "Once HTML5 browsers and fully capable Web runtimes are in place on the common Kindle through iPhone, the Web app will begin replacing native apps."
Technology author and consultant Fred Hapgood, however, sees the benefit of native apps. He claims that apps are convenient and notes that the "ease of use always wins." A third camp believes apps and the web will continue to co-exist. As Tony Smith of the Open Source Developers Club in Melbourne, Australia points out, "both will continue to grow in ways that are impossible for most to imagine."
So where do you stand? Are native apps are our future, will the web continue to dominate or will we find a happy medium somewhere in between?

We didn’t believe that 4.6-inch iPhone report but it sure makes a pretty mockup [Gallery]

We have seen iPhone mockups from ADR Studio’s Antonio De Rosa in the past, such as the recent iPhone SJ. Going with the naming scheme introduced with the new iPad, Rosa just published mock-ups of his latest creation: “the new iPhone.” This makes it a little easier to imagine a 4.6-inch iPhone with a Retina display hinted earlier today. You will notice the mockup also includes a LED indicator around the entire edge of the device; a home button integrated into the iOS UI, and an aluminum unibody design.
