Ski helmet charges iPods, iPhone and other mobile devices

A team of German researchers is working on technology that could let you ski all day without worrying about your smartphone battery, says a report in GlobalPost. Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, TEXSYS and the Technical University in Berlin have created a solar helmet that charges your mobile device while you ski. The helmet has a curved solar panel skin, integrated headphones and a microphone so you can use your phone or mp3 player on the slopes.

They've also designed a special set of gloves that can control your mobile device. Though it might not appeal to your casual, recreational skier, this solar system could be useful for adventurers who need extra juice for a long day mountaineering as well as mountain rescue teams who would appreciate the always-on communication.

Max Payne on its way to iOS as Max Payne Mobile

Max Payne Mobile

Max Payne—the classic PC and Mac game that was immensely popular in the early 2000s (read Kirk Hiner’s Max Payne review from way back then)—will be coming to iOS April 12th. Max Payne Mobile is a port of the original title, bringing high definition graphics as well as access to developer Rockstar’s Social Club feature. For anyone unfamiliar, Max Payne is a third-person shooter that follows the titular character through gun-fights, puzzle-solving, and some whacked out nightmares.

Rockstar has a good reputation for iOS ports of its games, taking into account the success that the port of Grand Theft Auto III had last year. Hopefully, we will see the same thing this time with Max Payne Mobile. We will find out this Thursda when Max Payne Mobile will be hitting the App Store.

Fun new MacBook Touch concept would make a great mobile device

With the Intel CPU news today, a 9to5Mac commenter posted the above fake commercial in our comments.

The joint mechanism is obviously a fake, but  it would not be out of the realm of possibility to see a 360-degree hinge on the next generation of MacBooks coupled with a touch display —especially because Apple has taken the Mac OS in the same direction as iOS during the last few years.

More usability is made available in the MacBook with a 360-degree hinge, but it also creates less need for an iPad, which does not bode well for this concept.

Samsung’s mobile design chief profiled, doesn’t shy from Apple aspirations but offended by accusations of copying

The Chicago Tribune does a great profile of Samsung’s head mobile designer Lee Minhyouk, a 40-year old Vice President.  Some notables

  • [Samsung's] strategy has always been to be the “fast executioner”, the first in the market with a copycat product when a new opportunity is presented. But it is not known as a great innovator or a company like Apple that can literally create a new market with an iconic product.
  • Lee, who has acquired the moniker of “Midas” for his golden touch with the Galaxy series, has travelled to Brazil’s Iguazu Falls and the ancient city of Cuzco in Peru for inspiration. Samsung sends the design team on such trips across the world to stoke their imaginary fires. Images or emotions they pick up on these trips can be “naturally expressed in design languages or lines and colors”, said Lee, who started out designing cars for Samsung’s failed auto joint venture with Renault in the 1990s.
  • “I might not be at (Ive’s) level yet, but I believe Samsung will produce such iconic products one day. It’s not just effort that makes it possible for a new product to be a massive hit. It also has to be timely, and technology should be ready to make a certain design a reality.”

Still, Lee takes offense to the charges that the Galaxy line was copied from Apple, saying that ”I’ve made thousands of sketches and hundreds of prototype products (for the Galaxy). Does that mean I was putting on a mock show for so long, pretending to be designing?”

“As a designer, there’s an issue of dignity. (The Galaxy) is original from the beginning, and I’m the one who made it. It’s a totally different product with a different design language and different technology infused.”
