New Apple Online Store coming soon banner is likely meaningless to most of us

There’s been talk this morning that Apple is “preparing [an] overhaul of its online store.” This is based off a banner that says a “new Apple Store is launching very soon.” The fact is that this new online store has nothing to do with the Apple Online Store that each of us run to whenever a new product is announced. This online store is more of an internal environment for educational institutions and Apple authorized resellers to buy more product for their students and store customers, respectively.

Apple authorized resellers began receiving notifications about an updated online store this past week (see above), but, again, that new store is simply an updated version of the reseller store that end-users should never see. On the notification email is an iMac displaying the current Apple Online Store for resellers.

That seemingly “new” Apple Online Store user interface is nearly two years old. Directly above is an Apple-created video overview of the online store provided to resellers in 2010. It appears that this online store update may span to Apple’s online store specifically for educational institutions (and perhaps for business customers), but these “New Online Store Coming Soon” banners are not referring to Apple’s standard online store. On the other hand, we know that Apple is at work on a new Apple Online Store (which could launch anytime), but these banners are not indicative of that re-design.

Sci-fi action RPG Operation CrossCounter coming April 26th

Operation CrossCounter mission

Sollmo, developer of the award-winning RPG Buddy Rush, has revealed Operation CrossCounter, an online Action RPG that will feature real-time, cross-platform gameplay across iOS, Android and web browsers. In Operation CrossCounter, players fight alongside friends in a war to save the universe from evil invading machines known as the Guroken.

Partner with up to three people or play alongside AI-controlled characters as you embark on hundreds of unique missions to combat the Guroken menace. These missions range from ambush to defense missions with different goals, maps and enemies on three unique worlds. Successes and failures in each mission contribute to an overall War Situation System which adapts the gameworld and available missions accordingly for all players.

Along the way you’ll create an anime-style character with fully customizable appearance, skills and weapons that reflect your battle style. Each weapon utilizes special skills and different attacks depending on how you touch and tap the screen.

If Operation CrossCounter sounds like fun, you can sign up for the closed beta test that starts on April 6th, or get more information on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and their official web site.

Sparrow for iOS updated: Push coming with or without Apple in upcoming version

The Sparrow team just announced version 1.1 for “Sparrow for iPhone” on its official blog, while also revealing Push API is coming to the iOS app’s next version:

Thanks to your amazing support, we feel confident that Apple might revise its position on the Push API. We’ll submit a first version of Sparrow 1.2 including it. This might delay Sparrow 1.2 validation but we’re already working with some partners to include Push in future versions of Sparrow without needing Apple clearance.

Push is coming. With or without Apple.

The team also said version 1.2 will include localization in nine languages, landscape mode when composing, and swipe up and down gestures to move between messages.

A screenshot gallery and version 1.1 updates are below.

‘World’s biggest’ Apple store coming to Dalian, China, according to mall sign

Apple will be opening its biggest flagship retail store to date located in Dalian, China, according to advertisements spotted in Parkland Mall (via M.I.C Gadget). A translation of the ad claims “Apple’s World’s Biggest Flagship Store will be coming soon” to the shopping center.

It appears the initial stages of construction are already underway with large Apple barricades outside the mall, but the report claims a rival shopping center called Dalian Department Store “sent its security team to push down the Apple Store banners.” The video below shows the security guards from the Dalian Department Store destroying the barricades after negotiations were unsuccessful.
//

It’s unclear exactly what the dispute was over. Local reports seem to indicate the rival store was against an expansion of the neighboring Parkland Mall as part of Apple’s construction. However, M.I.C Gadget claims, “Dalian Department Store is jealous of Parkland Mall for having an Apple Store. So, the Dalian Department Store sent its security team to push down the Apple Store banners outside the Parkland Mall.” Apple will obviously need to resolve these issues with their new neighbors. We’ll keep you posted when we get official word from Apple on this new ‘World’s Biggest’ flagship retail store.

Dark Meadow getting an update and free version, coming to Android

Dark Meadow is a title that's gained quite a bit of attention on the App Store since its release. It's a horror adventure game of sorts, though not that scary -- "dark fairytale" is what it calls itself -- with some really excellent graphics and pacing. If you've been turned off by the US$ 5.99 price in the past, good news: the title is going to be going free, kind of. There's a new content update headed to the game tonight that will include support for the iPad's Retina Display and a lot of new content and features for the title.

At the same time, there's a version coming out subtitled "The Pact" that will be free to download but won't include all of those new features and content. In short, if you want to play the game for free, you can. But if you want that new content, you'll have to buy the game. Current users will of course get the update for free.

Though we here at TUAW are naturally much more interested in iOS, if you happen to have an Android device and want to play the game, Dark Meadow's also coming out on that platform. That version will be updated to work specifically with the Tegra 3 processor, which we guess is all right. It's still got nothing on the A5, though.
