Starting April 8th, AT&T will unlock your iPhone 4S

AT&T iPhone 4S unlock

Good news for those iPhone users who wish to unlock their AT&T iPhones to use on the carrier of their choice; on Friday, AT&T announced it will start unlocking customers’ iPhones starting on April 8th.

AT&T’s official statement reads:

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

This is excellent for customers who are constantly traveling abroad with their AT&T iPhone. Not only they will be able to enjoy their AT&T iPhone overseas, but as long as the bands are supported, many owners could use it with other U.S. carriers like T-Mobile.

Previously AT&T’s policy didn’t allowed customers who finished their two-year term contract to unlock the iPhone through official avenues. Customers therefore couldn’t bring their iPhone along with them when switching carriers.

While many U.S. AT&T customers will rejoice over this, keep in mind that the iPhone is not compatible with T-Mobile’s faster 3G network. Since AT&T operates at a different frequency than the T-Mobile network, most users will have to get used to slower 2G(EDGE) data speeds.

In response to rising number of complaints, AT&T is unlocking iPhones starting Sunday (AT&T Statement)

It appears that AT&T has been hit hard by complaints from Apple iPhone users who have used up their 2 year subsidy and want to go elswhere, be that T-Mobile in the US or to roam internationally without paying AT&T’s high international costs.

Our report last week on Tim Cook’s office doing special requests to open iPhone may have set of a storm.   We’ve now received upwards of a hundred reports that, through Tim Cook’s office, 9to5Mac readers were able to unlock their iPhones.  Perhaps Cook was tired of his office being made to handle these requests.

AT&T will now unlock your iPhone if you are in good account standing, and are done with your obligated term of commitment (including having paid an early termination fee.

Here’s AT&T’s Statement:

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Here’s another fun fact:  If you have paid the no commit price, AT&T will unlock your phone as well.

Chalk one up for the good guys.  //

The best way to unlock your AT&T iPhone may be through Tim Cook’s office

When we brought you the story of Tim Cook convincing AT&T to unlock an iPhone on a customer’s behalf, we knew it would cause a bit of controversy because of AT&T’s questionable unlocking policies. Confusion among consumers regarding inconsistent policies for unlocking iPhones that have finished contractual obligations is nothing new. As witnessed in our original story, the carriers often make special exceptions for some customers while redirecting others to Apple, and in many cases simply flat out refusing to unlock iPhones.

It’s not clear AT&T is getting ready for a full-fledged policy change, but it looks like your best shot at getting an iPhone unlocked is through emailing Apple chief Tim Cook. A significant number of readers have reached out to us since our original story confirming AT&T is continuing to unlock iPhones at the request of Tim Cook’s office.
//

We’ve received upwards of six emails from readers confirming an email sent to Tim Cook’s office resulted in a response from AT&T Partnership Operations informing them the carrier would make an exception to unlock their device. Like the original reader, our tipsters have not received responses directly from Tim Cook, but did receive an email with instructions to tether their iPhone to iTunes to complete the unlock.

In their emails, most of the readers expressed frustration with not being able to use their iPhone on carriers outside the US and had previously been refused by AT&T. All of the readers were only contacted by AT&T after emailing Cook. After confirming the device’s IMEI’s and phone number, AT&T Partnership Operations has unlocked at least another half dozen iPhones.

If you have an iPhone you want unlocked for use on a different carriers, you might want to start with an email to tcook@apple.com or partnershipops@att.com.

iPhone Outsells All Other Smartphones Combined at AT&T and Sprint

The iPhone is reportedly outselling all other smartphone combined at AT&T and Sprint and selling at equal volume to all Android smartphones at Verizon. iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials

Analyst: AT&T & Sprint selling more iPhones than all other smartphones combined

While noting its March numbers indicate continued growth for the iPhone’s marketshare, Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley (via AllThingsD) said the iPhone is currently outselling “all toher smartphones” combined at both AT&T and Sprint. He also said Verizon is selling roughly as many iPhones as all Android phones combined: //

“Our March checks indicated the iPhone continues to extend its market share gains…we believe iPhones are outselling all other smartphones combined at Sprint and AT&T and selling at roughly equal volume to all Android smartphones at Verizon.”

Canaccord’s month-over-month comparison of the top three selling smartphones on the four biggest carriers shows Samsung’s Galaxy S II right behind the iPhone 4S since December on AT&T and Sprint, and the Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Razr lineup not far behind on Verizon. The iPhone 4 appears as the number three device on AT&T and Sprint for most months, except March 2012 with the Galaxy Note bumping out iPhone 4 for the third position on AT&T for that month.

We know for AT&T alone the iPhone accounted for approximately 80.8 percent of the total 9.4 million smartphonesit sold during Q4 2011. The company said in January it activated 7.6 million iPhones during the quarter, beating out 4.2 million iPhones activated on Verizon. According to the latest numbers from Nielsen, approximately 48 percent of smartphone owners are Android users, with approximately a third (32.1 percent) iPhone users.

AT&T sets itself up for failure: Says Lumia 900 launch will be a notch above iPhone

We are sure the Lumia 900 launch will be great for AT&T, but the carrier might be setting expectations a little high:

“At all levels, this is a notch above anything we’ve ever done,” AT&T device head Jeff Bradley said in an interview with CNET, noting that includes the launch of the iPhone.

Sure, Microsoft and AT&T will be throwing a lot of cash at this launch, and pricing their “Hero” device at $ 100 with plan certainly is aggressive, but does anyone really this launch will overshadow the 1 million-unit weekend of the iPhone 4S launch that AT&T itself said: //

AT&T today announced it activated more than 1 million iPhone 4S’ as of Tuesday, making it the most successful iPhone launch in the company’s history. AT&T was the first carrier in the world to launch iPhone in 2007 and is the only U.S. carrier to support iPhone 4S with 4G speeds. “It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download twice as fast as competitors’,” said Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. AT&T’s speed advantage, and the unique ability to talk and surf at the same time, has been roundly praised by industry pundits.

If you are looking for advantages in the Lumia 900 over the iPhone, it has a bigger display and LTE—but so does just about every Android phone released in the past six months. On the down side, it has an AMOLED 480-by-800-pixel screen that was popular when the HTC EVO came out two years ago.

CNET added:

“Before you walk in to the store, you know this is our hero phone,” Bradley said, referring to the Lumia 900′s flagship status.

The campaign is expected to last about six to eight weeks, according to people familiar with the situation.
