Jailbreak iPhone 4S - Jailbreak iOS 5 Untethered

Facebook, Dropbox iOS apps contain security hole that could allow identity theft (Updated)

Let's clear this up quickly: Yes, there's a security hole in the Facebook app. The Next Web also confirmed the same issue in the Dropbox app. The good news is this: It's very unlikely anyone would get your info this way.

Someone would have to have physical access to your iPhone, and you'd have to allow them to plug it into their Mac, then allow them to do a bunch of business on your phone to grab a plain text file from inside these apps, then they'd have to go and do something malicious on your Facebook or Dropbox accounts.

Although many have reported jailbreak is required to access this hole, that is simply not true. A Mac app like iExplorer, which allows you to open app folders on an iPhone, will allow you to access the security hole.

It works like this: iOS apps use little text files, .plist files (aka property list files), to store all sorts of little things about an app. In this case, Dropbox and Facebook are using an unencrypted property list to apparently store both the oauth key and its secret counterpart.

That's...astonishingly naive. (I wonder how many apps don't do this as well). Apple provides a secure mechanism called the system keychain which is meant for exactly this, providing a non-visible storage of sensitive data.

By using iExplorer to find the right plist, that file can be copied and dropped into another device, which would then be able to access your account as though you had already logged in. Using a property list in this way leaves us scratching our heads.

Facebook issued a comment saying they will patch this soon. I haven't seen any statement from Dropbox yet. That being said, this was a dumb mistake on Facebook's and Dropbox's parts -- they should have known better.

Update: Dropbox issued a statement as well, noting the Android version doesn't suffer from this vulnerability. Also, they are working on a fix now. Their statement is pasted below.

The Next Web did a little more testing and discovered you can't do this if you have set a passcode on your device.

From Dropbox:

We are currently updating our iOS app to do the same. We note that the attack in question requires a malicious actor to have physical access to a user's device. In a situation like that, a user is susceptible to all sorts of threats, so we strongly advise safeguarding devices.

This week on the Free Apps Roundup: If you came here looking for free games, then these are the apps you’re looking for. But this time, it’s special. Sure, there’s a plethora of games below, but there’s one that’s designed to turn fitness into a game. Yes, Fitocracy wants to make you healthy and maybe even better looking and force you to have fun while doing it! But there’s so much more on this week’s list. Prepare for download.

The Top Three:

  • Fitocracy – So, now everyone can just stop being lazy and be awesome instead. Sometimes a little help from your friends can go a long way. A little online peer pressure can probably go a lot farther. Fitocracy is all about making your fitness a social game. You earn points, unlock achievements, beat quests and get to respawn every time you die. Okay, that last part isn’t true. But you can track your entire workout and share it with the world. The service wants to keep you motivated, which should translate into a healthier you. Give it a try. It could be fun.
  • FileMaker Go 12 for iPad – Do you have a task? FileMaker says you can tackle any task with this app. It’s an easy to use database app. Basically, you can use it to collect information in customized ways. But it’s not completely free; you’ll need to pick up FileMaker Pro 12 to create your databases.
  • FileMaker Go 12 for iPhone – the iPhone version.
  • Ice Age Village – Sure, you could argue that this franchise has gone a little overboard, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like them anymore. This is the official Ice Age app. Basically, you’ll be helping the crew build and run a city. Plus, there are a ton of mini games along the way.

Will creativity tools be the “next wave” of iOS apps?

Image

Blogger Erica Ogg over at GigaOM's The Apple Blog brought up an interesting point in a post today, wondering aloud if creativity tools will be the next big wave of iOS apps. There have always been creativity tools, like painting and drawing apps, in the App Store, but Ogg based her comment on two beautiful and well-designed apps that appeared last week and have caught a lot of attention from buyers.

Those two apps are Snapguide and Paper. Snapguide (free) provides a simple way for anyone to create and share step-by-step how-to guides, while Paper by FiftyThree (free, with in-app tool purchases) is one of the best iPad sketching and painting apps I've ever seen and used. Both of the apps have immediately resonated with iOS users, who find the creative aspects of these apps as appealing as the traditional consumption-oriented apps that have been so popular on the iOS platform.

Ogg notes that "the debuts of Snapguide and Paper are showing that not only are developers making apps that make the iPhone and iPad more of a creative tool, but that users are responding." Many more developers may find themselves moving away from the heavily populated world of game app development to try the clear blue skies of creativity apps.

Sonos drops dedicated controllers in favor of iOS and Android apps

It was probably inevitable. Sonos, maker of wireless, whole-house music systems, will halt production of the handheld Sonos Control after May 31.

The company has offered iPhone and iPad controller apps for years, which are free and offer a complete set of features. I doubt the company sold many hardware controllers at US$ 349 when you could buy an iPod touch for about half the price and accomplish the same thing.

When the Sonos system was first offered for sale 10 years ago, smartphones were new, and some kind of small controller was necessary. With the invention of the iPhone, and the later ability to have dedicated apps, it was natural for Sonos to offer full control that way. An iPad app followed, and the dedicated controllers have become more and more irrelevant.

It's a small chapter in the larger book of changes that smartphone apps have added to the way we entertain ourselves, communicate and control household items like cable boxes, DVRs, and even security and lighting systems.
