iFixit launches Dual Hard Drive Kit and guides for Mid 2011 iMacs

While you might be familiar with iFixit from its in-depth teardown guides meant to provide the ultimate resource for DIYers, it also offers the necessary tools to get the job done. We told you a while back about its “iPhone oppression kit” allowing you to swap out Apple’s pentalobular screws with standard Phillips screws. Stemming from a discovery of two unused mounting points in its recent 21.5″ and 27″ iMac teardowns, iFixit is now providing a kit that provides all the tools necessary to install a second hard drive in your mid 2011 iMac.
//
The iMac Mid 2011 Dual Hard Drive Kit ($ 69.95) is available for both the 21.5″ and 27″ models and comes with a Custom SATA power cable, SATA data cable, custom-cut 3M VHB double-sided mounting tape, two heavy-duty suction cups, spudger, and a 26 piece bit driver kit. Of course the suction cups are for removing your LCD to get inside the iMac (pictured right). It’s definitely not the easiest second hard drive installation, but iFixit has has put together detailed instructions for both models here and here.
The kit of course doesn’t come with the hard drive itself, for that you’ll have to get your hands on a 2.5″ SATA drive. iFixit recommends installing “OS X on an SSD for lightning fast startup times, while still being able to use your original hard drive for mass storage.” Or you can always just toss a 1 TB HD in there for storage.
You can grab the Mid 2011 Dual Hard Drive Kit for the 21″ model here, and the 27″ model here. If you still need convincing, iFixit outlined some of the benefits:
The iMac never leaves your sight, so you keep your data secure.
* You can use any hard drive or SSD you’d like.
* You learn something during the process of taking apart your iMac.
* Two-way international shipping of an iMac is insanely expensive. Current solutions on the market require you to ship your iMac to the U.S. if you want a second drive installed.
Small business iPad use quadrupled to 34% in 2011, survey says
Study: iPad usage nearly quadrupled among the small business market in 2011
A new national study indicates the iPad nearly quadrupled among the small business market in 2011.
The Business Journal is a Charlotte N.C.-based solutions platform for companies targeting business resolution makers. Its recent study, which is fully available on March 31, highlights Apple’s iOS tablet as “the fastest growing technology among the SMB market” due to usage growing from 9 percent in 2010 to 34 percent in 2011.
More information is available below.

Additional findings illustrate the iPad’s rate of familiarity reaching “incredibly high levels” since its April 2010 launch. Apparently, 75 percent of small business owners claim they are either somewhat or very familiar with the slate.
The Business Journals’ Vice President of Research Godfrey Phillips said the growth demonstrates a new phenomenon that is gripping the SMB market:
“Our research has shown that for SMB owners, productivity and efficiency, which used to be the central benefits of technology, are now declining in importance compared to accessibility. Now, it’s crucial that business owners have access to their business information and data, anytime and anywhere. The iPad, as well as smartphones and cloud computing, are all part of this new trend and are experiencing significant growth as a result of that need.”
Further analysis of the SMB market depicts 34 percent of iPad users as “tech-savvy and financially successful.” The larger portion of the segment, approximately 72 percent, portrays iPad users in the SMB market as college educated with an annual household income of $ 176,000. Moreover, their small businesses have existed about 28 years and have an average $ 9.2 million in annual sales.
The study surveyed 1,400 business owners with five to 499 employees each.

Apple tops 2011 mobile PC sales if iPad is included

According to an NPD DisplaySearch report, Apple was the top mobile PC vendor for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the rest of the year -- if you consider iPads to be mobile PCs.
In the fourth quarter, Apple shipped almost 23.4 million MacBooks and iPads, and over 62.8 million for the entire year. The NPD numbers show that almost 80 percent of the Apple totals consisted of iPads (18.7 million in the fourth quarter, 48.4 million for all of 2011).
The analysis for that final quarter of 2011 shows that when considering tablets alongside notebooks, Apple had a 59.1 percent share of the market. Amazon shipped an estimated 5.3 million units (about a 16.7 percent market share) during that time, showing the popularity of the Android-powered, US$ 199 Kindle Fire.
When looking at notebook computers only, HP was the winner, shipping 8.7 million notebooks in the fourth quarter. Apple was in fifth place behind Dell, Acer, and Lenovo with only 4.6 million MacBooks sold. NPD said that the numbers for notebooks were flat for the fourth quarter, while the year-over-year numbers showed sales up about 11 percent.
