Griffin Turns The iPad Into A Kid-Safe Art Table

The flocks of kids I always see clustered around iPads whenever I walk into an Apple Store suggest that kid + iPad = best new toy ever. Only problem is,  really young kid + iPad also = anxious parent. Griffin thinks it has a case + app combo to fix that. LightBoard is a shatter-resistant [...] Cult of Mac

In other news the same upcoming web browser for the Apple TV we showed you recently has a new walkthrough video (below) this time demonstrating HTML 5 video playing functionality on the second-generation Apple TV.

Appletell reviews the Shield Limited case for iPhone 4

Agent 18 Shield Limited case for iPhone 4Provides: Hard shell protection from shocks, scratches and scuffs
Developer: Agent 18
Minimum Requirements: iPhone 4
Price: $ 29.95
Availability: Now

Your iPhone 4; it’s cool, but it isn’t cheap, and going all the way to the local Mac store to get it fixed isn’t exactly a barrel of fun, either. So let’s work on ways you can prevent damage.

The first line of defense is a solid case, one that will protect your device in the case of a minor drop, scraping against keys in your purse, or one of the million other small annoyances your phone will inevitably endure. The hardshell cases by Agent 18 do this job, and they do it quite well. If you want to keep your phone safe from the occasional drop or scratch, the Shield Limited will be what you need. It will make the phone a little fatter in your pocket, but if you put it in the back and let people assume that it’s a wallet, you can impress.

The case slides on and off easily enough with a removable bottom piece. The holes for buttons and parts are all correctly placed and large enough to not cause problems if you have fat fingers. The power button’s hole has a recess in the case that allows for easy access.Unfortunately, it also lets quarters in your pocket tap the button as well.

The case could be better fitted on the front to give you some shielding if it hits the ground.  It is raised a bit, but unless you happen to drop your iPhone on a perfectly even surface, it won’t do much good. Just be aware that the tapering is minimal.

The case comes in a few stylish patterns, but they all bear the same physical design.

Shield Limited case for iPhone 4

On the whole, the Shield Limited is a reasonably priced option, but the lack of screen protection means this one is for adults only.

Social Media + Dropbox = Free Storage

Section: Mac Software, Internet / Websites, Social Media, Features, How-To, Originals

dropbox free storage options

Like Dropbox? Use Facebook and/or Twitter? Want 768MBs of free storage? Have no idea what I’m talking about, but want to save and share your computer files from anywhere?

Dropbox is a simple service. You create a folder on your computer. Anything you drop into that folder is synched to The Internet Cloud, meaning you can access it via the web, synch folders between computers, e-mail links to files, and access multiple revisions of files. You get 2GB of storage free. with “Pro” storage, you get 50 or 100 GB for an additional fee.

But there are ways to get more free storage. The first is using a referral link (like that one right there). Get your friends to sign up and you both get 250MBs of extra storage (up to 8 GB). But Dropbox also offers ways of getting an additional 768MB of storage by linking your social media accounts (Twitter and Facebook) to Dropbox… even if you delete them right away.

It breaks down like this: Dropbox will give you 128MB of extra storage for each of the following steps you take:

  • Say what you like about Dropbox
  • Connect your Twitter account
  • Connect your Facebook account
  • Follow @Dropbox on Twitter
  • Tweet about Dropbox (auto filled with the statement you made about Dropbox)
  • Update your Facebook status (likewise)

And with each step you take you’ll get 128MB of storage.

Now, if you’re worried about the privacy of giving an external app the ability to access your info or post to your account, or simply find that Dropbox is posting too often, you don’t have to keep these unlimited settings. After each step, you can alter or remove the settings.

In Facebook, go to Account > Privacy Setting > Applications and Websites > Edit Your Settings > Applications You Use and alter or delete Dropbox.

In Twitter, go to your Connections page and Revoke Access.

Of course, if you leave the posts up and anyone follows your referral to install Dropbox, both you and he will get the extra 250MB.
