Dragon Dictate for Mac “learns” better than any previous version of Dictate, responds faster to spoken commands, and supports Dragon Voice Shortcuts for searching the web, email and Mac desktop by voice.
Dragon senior vice president and general manager Peter Mahoney says that the elements of Dictate deemed most important to Mac customerssuch as the native Mac interfacehave been retained, while integrating many features of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 with the benefits of improved accuracy and smarter command and control capabilities.
As MacSpeech Dictate users (I’m one, and have been using dictation software as a production tool since the late ‘90s) are accustomed to, Dragon Dictate for Mac lets users simply speak into a microphone to produce transcribed text in most Mac applications with claimed recognition accuracy rate of up to 99 percent out of the box.
Well, you will have to read through a training setup text to get started, but the amount of training needed to achieve amazingly good accuracy is minimal compared with what was required by, say, iListen. My training run took about 15 minutes.
The application install is a simple drag and drop from the software DVD, but you’ll also have to insert a supplementary data disk from which the program installs necessary support files.
With Dragon Dictate for Mac, you can also control your Mac by voice commands as an alternative to keyboard and mouse. The software improves on the capabilities of MacSpeech Dictate by supporting a wider range of commands such as “Reply To This Message” or “Open Microsoft Word” or “Search Google for Italian restaurants,” as well as custom vocabulary and voice commands you can create for yourself in order to automate workflows. Dragon Voice Shortcuts for Search lets you search for information, files and content anywhere on your Mac or on the Web by using single voice commands. For example:
- “Search Google for hula dancing lessons”
- “Search Bing for wedding dress repair”
- “Search Yahoo for gondola rentals”
- “Search Mail for RSVP”
- “Search Mac for history term paper”
Also new to Mac users with Dragon Dictate is a suite of commands designed to simplify document editing, allowing you to select and delete text, insert new text, capitalize text, and so forth. New proofreading commands leverage powerful Text-to-Speech capabilities built into Mac OS X, and a suite of new punctuation commands include actions like:
- “Put Parentheses Around <text>”
- “Put Brackets Around <text>”
Enhanced voice navigation capabilities in Dragon Dictate for Mac 2.0 let users control more cursor and mouse actions by voice, with new features including:
- MouseGrid: Placement of the cursor can be accomplished with MouseGrid commands
- Mouse Click: Speak a command, with optional <modifiers> that designate one or more keys such as Command, Option, Shift or Caps Lock
- Mouse Movement: New commands move the mouse pointer by voice
- Flexible Microphones: Dragon Dictate users who have multiple microphones, such as a wired and wireless headset, can easily switch between microphones within the same voice profile.
I can vouch for Dragon Dictate 2.0 being the best Mac dictation experience I’ve yet encountered. However, there’s still room for improvement. I’m still getting a transposed letters glitch on text dictated into software other than Dictate’s own dedicated dictation Notepad, and the voice-correction feature can still stand a fair bit of user-friendliness streamlining and speed improvement (bearing in mind that I’m testing it on a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook with 4 GB of RAM running OS 10.6.6). However, Dragon Dictate is an excellent tool.

iFixit rails Apple about getting screwed five ways (Pentalobe)
Apple is screwing your iPhone: what the issue is is that Apple is quietly moving to a new kind of tamper-resistant screw on its iPhone to keep you out, as iFixit explain in the video above. (And indeed as our own Mark Gurman spotted first way back in November).
Writing on the team blog, the intrepid disassemblers note, “This is not a standard Torx, and there are no readily available screwdrivers that can remove it. This isn’t the first time they’ve used this type of screw—it first appeared in the mid-2009 MacBook Pro to prevent you from replacing the the battery—and Apple is using a similar screw on the outer case of the current MacBook Air. This screw is the primary reason the 11? MacBook Air earned a lousy repairability score of 4 out of 10 in our teardown last October.”
Apple’s service manuals refer to these as “Pentalobular” screws. They are not security Torx screws. It is next to impossible to get the right screwdriver head to remove them (but there’s a solution, so read on). Unless you figure something out, you can say goodbye to cheap repair shops, self assembly and disassembly and so on. Confirmation this is the plan is easy — these screws are only used on the exterior chassis of the iPhone — it is specifically to keep you out of your device.
(From iFixIt): Which devices are affected?
Now that we’ve got the background out of the way, what’s Apple doing with these new fasteners?
- This screw head first appeared in the mid-2009 MacBook Pro as a fastener for the battery.
- The 2010 MacBook Air uses this screw on the lower case to prevent any access to the internals.
- Many non-US iPhone 4 units have had smaller versions of these evil screws all along.
- Apple has switched production, and new U.S. units are shipping with the evil screws.
- If you take your phone into Apple for any kind of service, they will sabotage it by replacing your screws with the new tamper-resistant screws.
Looking bleak? Fret not. iFixIt have found a driver and a selection of replacement screws which they are selling as the iPhone 4 Liberation kit for $ 9.95.
